Happy Endings

Hoop Dance #1, new smoke fired vase 2012
About a month ago I fired a bisque load I knew was taking way too long. I had recently fired a couple of glaze loads that seemed to take too long, so, unsure if it was old elements in the kiln or a bad cone, I decided to let it keep on firing. The end result of the bisque was a bad cone and a load of overfired pieces. Although I liked the color of the Raku vases - more of a tan color than the usual pinkish bisqueware - I wasn't sure if they would be ok to Raku fire. I decided to try the good old smoke firing technique - also known as pit firing or barrell firing - a technique that I often forget about while busily firing the same Raku over and over. The end result was one of the best smoke firings I have ever had - and a few new "tricks" I threw in along the way to give my new smoke fired work a little more pizazz. I am now trying some different types of clay hoping to find one that will be more tan than pink after bisque firing to normal temperature so I can keep on smokin'...

Raku and Roll!

It's been fun making espresso cups and trying out the new "wood fired" glazes over the past few "cold" months, but now it's time to get back to Raku. Crisp Spring days are perfect for getting outside and firing up the kiln. I have also been experimenting with using some of my old Raku glazes with some new ones. I'm really pleased with my new blue glaze - seen here to the left on the rim of the Raku Vase. I'll be trying out some more new glazes over the next few weeks!

Fire on the Mountain

It's been a nice mild winter up here in the Mountains and I have been able to mix up some new glazes and crank out a bunch of new work - including the Cream and Sugar Set pictured to the left. Now that Spring is upon us, the temperatures are rising and the days are getting longer, it's prime time to start firing again on a regular schedule. I got things going last week with a load full of new work and new glazes which turned out pretty good. I have the kiln going again today and plenty of things ready to keep the kiln firing each week. I can't wait to see how the new Honey Pot comes out! I will be putting new work for sale on Etsy and of course in the Gallery as well!

New Year, New Work!

It's been a busy winter here at Greenbrier Pottery. A mild winter with little to no snow has meant lots of production in the studio making new work - including Leaf Vases, Pitchers and Small Casseroles. I've also been busy mixing glazes - new and old - including a new Greenbrier Green I've been working on. It won't be long until I'll be firing again - and trying out the new work!
